Established in 2002 as a result of the Long-Term Care Security Act of 2000, the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) provides group long-term care insurance for federal government employees, retirees, and their families.

Federal Employee Long Term Care Insurance

The Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) is an optional benefit designed to help federal employees, retirees, and their family members plan ahead for the high cost of long-term care. Unlike traditional health insurance or Medicare, long-term care insurance helps cover services like in-home care, assisted living, adult day care, and nursing home care—things most health plans don’t cover.

Offered through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and currently administered by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company , FLTCIP provides customizable coverage options. But premiums can be steep, and past rate hikes have left many federal employees questioning whether the coverage is worth it.

Currently, the FLTCIP is indefinitely frozen to new applicants. Should you plan to enroll in FLTCIP if/when enrollment unfreezes, or should you explore other options? And if you already have FLTCIP coverage, should you keep it?

Whether you’re approaching retirement or still years away, understanding your long-term care options is a critical part of a complete retirement plan. The FLTCIP isn’t the only choice—and it may not be the best fit for your needs, goals, or budget.

Need help deciding what role long term care insurance should play in your federal retirement plan? Attend our next webinar on the topic, explore the FLTCIP-specific resources below, or schedule a one-on-one conversation with our team.
